AmeriCorps Family Literacy Tutor
Full-time for 12 months (Start date of August 8, 2017)
Pay: total living stipend of $12,630 (distributed biweekly)
Location: Grand Rapids, MI and Wyoming, MI area
The Literacy Center of West Michigan is seeking highly-effective tutors to help parents learn to read, write, converse in English, and develop strategies to support their children’s literacy. The ideal candidates for this full-time tutoring position will be detailed-oriented, autonomous, and patient. This position requires the selected candidates to be screened and approved through the national AmeriCorps program.
Qualifications
- College degree required.
- Written and oral proficiency in English.
- Interest in family and children’s literacy issues.
- Strong relationship-building skills to develop partnerships with adult learners and their families.
- Ability to meet weekly and monthly deadlines.
- Ability to collaborate with coworkers in close environment, yet able to display independent decision-making.
- High-level knowledge of technology.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and personal transportation.
- Schedule flexibility for required day and evening responsibilities.
Areas of Responsibility
Instruction
- Teach English reading, speaking and writing skills to parents with children in local schools via a one-to-one tutoring method.
- Develop contextualized lesson plans and activities that address parent goals and needs.
- Execute components of our Family Literacy model, including weekly parenting discussions.
- Attend school events to promote the program and recruit potential parents.
- Participate in Family Activity Nights at the school.
- Assist with implementation of an active learner waiting list, including facilitating weekly conversation clubs.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date attendance and progress records.
- Submit required data and reports by specified deadlines.
- Develop and implement learner recruitment strategies.
- Assist with intake process for new learners from schools including parent surveys and assessments.
Collaboration
- Support office culture and values that contribute toward a collaborative, inclusionary workplace.
- Publicize the Literacy Center of West Michigan in the community.
- Recruit volunteers to serve with the Literacy Center of West Michigan.
- Attend AmeriCorps and Adult Tutoring Program meetings at the Literacy Center of West Michigan.
- Participate in periodic AmeriCorps events to promote civic engagement.
AmeriCorps Requirements and Benefits
- Must pass local, state, and national FBI background and sex offender registry check
- Must be U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident of the United States
- Full-time (35-40 hours per week) with little time off during required service period
- Day and evening hours necessary, with some weekend hours required
- An Education Award of $5,815 will be available at the end of service period to members who fulfill service-hour requirements
- Basic health insurance, childcare benefits, and loan forbearance may be provided for those who qualify
