Location: Greater Grand Rapids area
Salary: $30,000- $40,000 based on education and experience

The Adult Tutoring Program (ATP) at the Literacy Center of West Michigan is seeking a highly-competent Literacy Coordinator to manage a caseload of Adult Basic English and ESL learners, to lead trainings and orientations for volunteer tutors, and to assist in assessments and data management.

General Description

Literacy Coordinators enroll and manage a caseload of Adult Basic Education and ESL learners with literacy goals. They support and supervise tutor/learner pairs and provide recommendations for retention and learning. Literacy Coordinators assist with program development and improvement, lead trainings, and develop curriculum and activities.


  • BA in Education, Literacy, or related field
  • ESL certificate (e.g. CELTA, TESOL) appreciated
  • At least two years of experience working in the field of ESL/ABE
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Able to work collaboratively
  • Schedule flexibility
  • Access to own transportation
  • Detail-oriented
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Able to work comfortably and quickly with a computer (particularly Word and Excel) and databases
  • Cultural sensitivity and social awareness
  • Spanish conversational skills highly preferred

Areas of Responsibility

Adult Literacy Students

  • Administer assessment, monitor progress, and provide general support
  • Manage databases and systems for learner and learning progress tracking
  • Plan and oversee learner activities
  • Select textbooks and curricula for tutors
  • Develop teaching activities and materials that address learner goals and needs
  • Assist Program Director with year-end data collection
  • Develop and lead recruitment and retention strategies to meet annual goals

Volunteer Activities

  • Assist with volunteer tutor recruitment and retention
  • Provide volunteer orientations
  • Lead tutor training workshop sessions
  • Supervise volunteer tutors and provide the necessary support
  • Compile volunteer related data
  • Develop and facilitate tutor workshops based on the needs of tutors


  • Support efforts to bring about a just and vibrant West Michigan through the power of literacy
  • Tutor one adult learner
  • Support office culture and values and exhibit cultural competency
  • Other duties as assigned
