The Literacy Center of West Michigan is seeking a Spanish Language Instructor for its Family Literacy Program. The position seeks to improve the ability of Spanish speakers to read and write in Spanish that is specific to their child’s education, their families’ health, and their everyday lives (specifically reading, and writing the Spanish language in the context of their lives)

 

Qualifications

  • MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) or Teaching certificate with ESL endorsement
  • Experience in group instruction, administering language tests and lesson development
  • Experience working with adults as well as two or more years ESL teaching experience (preferably experience with low literacy learners)
  • Fluency in Spanish and English. An ability to teach speaking, listening, reading and writing skills utilizing the context of the child’s school and family needs
  • Facilitate group learning and administer tests
  • Structure learning to proficiency in Spanish as a Second Language Instruction
  • Develop lesson plans teaching Spanish for basic literacy
  • Ability to relate to people in a warm and caring manner
  • Communicate with organizational representatives
  • Familiarity or willingness to work with Google Drive, and other tech-based educational programs and/or virtual platforms

Areas of Responsibility

  • Test participants learning gains and keep progress records of participants as needed
  • Work with stakeholders to develop lesson plans and teaching strategies
  • Teach written Spanish that is contextualized to the needs that classroom learners perform each day
  • Select appropriate materials and develop lesson plans tailored to the learners’ needs
  • Work with FLP Director to implement written curriculum
  • Work with FAN Coordinator to support multi-generational monthly Family Activity Nights (FAN)
  • Take attendance and track lessons through Google Docs
  • Utilize technology to engage learners in distance-learning, as feasible
  • AProvide feedback for future planning of Spanish programming
  • Support efforts to bring about a just and vibrant West Michigan through the power of literacy
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Salary Range

$16.79 to $22.71/hr
