Location: Greater Grand Rapids area

The Literacy Center of West Michigan is seeking a Spanish Language Instructor for its Customized Workplace English Program. The position seeks to improve the ability of English speakers employed in the fields of construction and public works to communicate in Spanish both verbally and in writing. Classes will be held in-person during the week in the summer and fall.



  • MA in Spanish, Education, or related field preferred
  • Experience in group instruction, lesson development, and assessment administration
  • Experience working with adults as well as two or more years teaching experience
  • Fluency in Spanish and English
  • Ability to teach Spanish speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills utilizing the context of construction and public works
  • Cultural sensitivity and social awareness
  • Schedule flexibility
  • Reliable transportation
  • Ability to work collaboratively
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Familiarity or willingness to work with Google Drive, Microsoft Office, and other tech-based educational programs and/or virtual platforms

Areas of Responsibility

  • Select appropriate materials and develop lesson plans tailored to the workplace (with assistance from CWE staff)
  • Instruct groups of employees in person
  • Assess participants’ learning gains and keep progress records of participants
  • Teach Spanish that is contextualized to the needs that learners encounter in their workplaces
  • Utilize technology to engage learners in distance-learning, if needed
  • Provide feedback for future planning of Spanish programming
  • Support efforts to bring about a just and vibrant West Michigan through the power of literacy
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Salary Range

$18 to $23/hr
