How Workplace English Changed Jorge's Career

Jorge at WW

When Jorge arrived from Cuba, he had a degree in electrical engineering but limited English. After taking Workplace English classes through his company, he advanced from the foundry floor to the R&D lab—eventually becoming Lab Manager.

Jorge shared his story at Wine & Words 2025: I am from Cuba, and I came to the United States in 2017. Back in my country, I studied and worked as an electrical engineer. But when I arrived here, even with my education and experience, I quickly realized that my English was not enough.

At first, I worked as a foundry laborer in my company. It was hard and honest work, but deep inside I knew I could do more. The problem was not my knowledge—it was the language. Without English, I could not communicate my ideas, show my skills, or move forward.

Fortunately, my company gave me the opportunity to take English classes with the Literacy Center during my work hours. At the beginning, I was nervous, but the teachers and volunteers welcomed me. They gave me patience, encouragement, and confidence. Step by step, my English improved. Slowly, I started to feel more comfortable at work, at home, and in the community.

And because of that progress, my life has completely changed. Today, I have moved from the foundry floor to the R&D lab. I am proud to say that I am now the Lab Manager in my company. English opened that door for me.

For me, learning English has been more than just learning a language. It has given me independence, confidence, and the opportunity to grow both professionally and personally.

I want to sincerely thank the Literacy Center, the teachers,  and all of you who make these programs possible. You are not only teaching English—you are transforming lives. You transformed mine, and you are transforming many others as well.
