Learner Blog Spotlight: Shay Builds Confidence Through Literacy

A lifelong Grand Rapids resident, Shay is passionate about serving her community. Despite growing up facing significant challenges that interrupted her education, she never gave up on her desire to learn. Frequent transitions at home and responsibilities as a caregiver to her mother made it difficult to attend school, and she eventually left before earning her high school diploma.

Today, Shay is dedicated to serving others through full-time ministry. She leads Bible studies, participates in prayer groups, mentors others, and is preparing for the next step in her journey. "I want to grow, I want to learn, and I want to go to seminary," she said.

Shay discovered the Literacy Center after seeing a flyer at the Grand Rapids Public Library. Although life led her away for a time, she recently returned in 2022 with a renewed commitment to her education. Since being matched with her one-on-one literacy coach, she has been working consistently on her goals, including earning her GED, attending seminary school, and becoming more independent so she can continue leading and serving others.

Through coaching, Shay says she's gained more than academic skills. "Learning at the Literacy Center has helped me find my voice and gain confidence."

She also shared that she's become more comfortable asking for help, expressing herself, and identifying what she needs to continue learning. When asked what advice she would give someone considering the Literacy Center, Shay didn't hesitate:

"We don't grow without a challenge. We grow when we're being challenged."

As Shay continues working toward her GED and future studies, she is proving that it's never too late to pursue your goals, discover your voice, and keep learning.
