The Literacy Center of West Michigan is pleased to publish Learner Spark, Issue No. 5, now available as a free PDF download. Learner Spark is a learner-written magazine that shares original stories from adult learners across Literacy Center programs. The writing reflects learners’ lived experiences and is published in their own words as part of ongoing literacy development.

About This Issue

This special issue was put together in honor of the United States' 250th anniversary and Grand Rapids' 175th anniversary. The issue brings together a collection of learner writing created through classes and learning spaces at the Literacy Center. The submissions include recipes, stories of culture, and learner experiences and journeys to the United States. Some pieces are written in learners' first languages, with English translations included. In the coming weeks, we will also publish selected Learner Spark stories individually on this blog to highlight learner voices and make the writing easier to share.

Volunteer literacy coaches are encouraged to use Learner Spark as a literacy practice tool with learners. Stories can support reading comprehension, discussion, vocabulary development, and writing reflection using real, relevant learner voices.
