Lesvia first enrolled in English classes with the Literacy Center in 2012, attending sessions held at her child’s elementary school. Since then, she has remained an active learner—building her English skills year after year while also becoming a steady leader in her school community.
As a classroom helper, Lesvia spends long stretches of time at the school. She supports a kindergarten classroom, tying shoes, chaperoning field trips, organizing fundraisers, and assisting wherever help is needed. She also encourages other parents to enroll in English classes. In addition, Lesvia voluntarily gathers food and drinks that might otherwise go to waste and distributes them to people experiencing homelessness.
At the Literacy Center, staff have witnessed her dedication firsthand and have gotten to know her through the years. Melissa Reddy, MI Impact Program Coordinator, shared in a letter of recommendation that Lesvia “is dedicated and kindhearted, and it is a privilege to know and interact with her so regularly.”
This past year, Lesvia focused on preparing for her citizenship interview while continuing to strengthen her healthcare vocabulary and professional English skills. Last fall, she passed her U.S. citizenship interview! She also advanced her English proficiency level and is preparing to enter an advanced training program. “For me, learning English is a very important tool to begin any achievement you want to make in your life,” Lesvia shares. “It’s a gateway to success and achieving your dreams.”
Lesvia continues to serve her community, support other parents, and invest in her own growth. With each step forward, she is creating new opportunities for her family and modeling what lifelong learning looks like.
