Tabo is a participant in the MI Impact program at the Literacy Center, a contextualized English and healthcare career training program in partnership with Corewell Health.
Tabo first arrived in the United States from Afghanistan in December 2024 with her family. It was a major life change and the beginning of a new chapter in her education and career.
It had always been her dream to continue her medical studies in the United States. When the Taliban came to power, they closed universities and schools for girls in her country. So, she decided to come to the United States and follow her dream.
After arriving, she decided to study English to strengthen her communication and career skills. “I know it is very important for communication, education, and my future career in healthcare,” she shared. Learning English has helped her connect with others, understand her classes, and feel more confident in professional settings. Now she can understand professional conversations better and express herself more clearly.
Through her classes at the Literacy Center, Tabo learned about the Medical Assistant training program and decided to apply. Before coming to the U.S., she studied General Medicine and worked in a hospital in Afghanistan. Becoming a Medical Assistant allows her to continue using her medical knowledge and experience to help others.
The Literacy Center has played an important role in supporting her journey. Her teachers have helped her improve her English, grammar, and pronunciation, and the staff and volunteers have provided encouragement and guidance along the way.
Today, Tabo can communicate more confidently with classmates, teachers, and patients. She also has her family, who always supports and encourages her. They help her study and remind her how important education is for their future as a family.
“At the Literacy Center, you are not just learning English,” she said. “you are building a better future for yourself and your family.”
