Oxford Picture Dictionary

April 2018

We are excited to announce the newest addition to the tutor library: The Oxford Picture Dictionary.

This 288-page paperback resource holds a goldmine of support for vocabulary teaching and language development. With over 4,000 English words and phrases, this dictionary supplies vibrant contextual illustrations that help learners understand the unit themes with bright, engaging artwork.

The authors organized the book into 12 thematic units that range from Everyday Language to People, from Health to Academic Study, to even Job Search. Then those themes are broken down into sub-topics that are easier for the learner to work through. The authors also expanded this edition to encompass three new subjects: workplace, academic study, and citizenship.

Each unit starts with an 'intro' page which teaches vocabulary that will appear within the sub-topics alongside with various practice activities. The story pages at the end of the unit promote literacy skills and give the learner a chance bring the overall theme, activities, and vocabulary together in a three-paragraph narrative. The different multi-level practice activities and pre/post reading questions allow the learner to use the picture dictionary as a workbook to develop their workforce and academic skills.

The verb guide found in the back of the book is what makes the Oxford Picture Dictionary a well-rounded reference material. The authors explain that verbs in English are either regular or irregular in the past tense and past participle form, and they give a detailed list of both regular and irregular verbs.

This resource can be found in the reference materials section of the Literacy Center's tutor library. For more information, you can also visit the teacher’s resource online or contact your Literacy Coordinator.
