“Learning English makes me feel excited.”

Meet Sudha, one of the many learners being celebrated at Spellebration on Wednesday April 15th.

Sudha came to the United States from Sri Lanka last year with her husband and three daughters. Overwhelmed by new structures and procedures, and with a history of working in government, she hopes to use her experience again once her spoken English grows stronger. Sudha joined a family literacy class to practice speaking and understanding American accents. Her practice is paying off: Sudha recently spoke with her children’s teachers at school and felt more confident expressing her thoughts. Practicing with classmates from many countries whose only common language is English, Sudha hopes to continue improving her English and develop an American accent of her own.
