Meet Felipe, one of the many learners being celebrated at Spellebration on Wednesday April 15th.
“Since starting the class, my life has changed a lot. I can go out alone now. I have an easier job now. I go shopping now. And I want to learn to speak English more.”
Felipe is from Guatemala and first came to the U.S. to work on farms in California, where he mostly spoke Spanish. When he moved to Grand Rapids to work at a factory, “English was everywhere,” he says. Everyday tasks, from going to the doctor to ordering food, often meant asking friends to translate. Since being promoted to Forklift driver, his supervisor encouraged him to learn English to become a supervisor himself. Having left school after fourth grade, Felipe now practices weekly with his teacher, classmates, and his son.
